What Is Currently Not Collectible Status?

Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status tells the IRS you can't pay your tax debt right now. The IRS stops collection actions like levies and garnishments when you prove paying would create financial hardship. You still owe the debt and interest keeps adding up, but the IRS pauses active collection efforts. This status isn't permanent. The IRS reviews your finances periodically and can remove CNC status if your situation improves.

  • Temporarily stops IRS collection actions
  • Protects you from levies and wage garnishments
  • Requires proof of financial hardship

Who Needs Currently Not Collectible Status?

Anyone who owes the IRS but can't afford payments qualifies for consideration. This includes businesses facing cash flow problems, taxpayers with medical expenses or emergencies, or anyone whose basic living expenses exceed their income. If paying the IRS means you can't afford rent, food, or necessary expenses, you might qualify. CNC status gives you breathing room while you recover financially.

  • Businesses with severe cash flow problems
  • Taxpayers facing medical or family emergencies
  • Anyone whose expenses exceed their income

How UpFront CPA Helps

We guide you through the entire CNC application. First, we analyze your financial situation and gather required documentation. Then we complete Form 433-A or 433-B and submit your hardship case to the IRS. We negotiate with revenue officers and respond to any IRS questions. Once approved, we monitor your status and help you transition to a payment plan when your finances improve.
